Production Units
BLUE ISLAND HOLDING LTD currently boasts three production units, namely:

• The Hatchery Unit

• The Open-Sea Fish Farming Unit

• The Fish Processing Unit (FPU)

The Hatchery Unit

Located in the Acrotiri area in Limassol, this unit specialises in breeding fry (fish offspring), focusing mainly on two types of fish: Seabream (Sparus Aurata) and Seabass (Dicentrarchus Labrax).

The fry production process comprises of several stages. The first is the collection of the eggs from a number of specially selected fish (“Breeders”). Once these eggs have hatched, a systematic feeding of the young will ensure that they reach an average desired weight of 1,5 to 2,5 grams. During the hatching process, all methods used ensure that all the born fish are of the highest quality, both health-wise and development-wise. These methods are completely natural aiming at a precise replication of all of nature’s own procedures.

It must be noted that the Hatchery unit is the first one in the Mediterranean that has succeeded in producing an all year-round seabream fry by using the photoperiodic method (this involved the simulation of optimal circumstances for the impregnation of the parent fish). The Hatchery unit is also a pioneer in the R&D domain, notably having successfully mass bred new fish species such as dentex (synagrida, dentex dentex), red seabream (pagrus major), red porgy (fangri, pagrus pagrus), marbled spinefoot (prosfygoula, siganus rivulatus), shi drum (milokopi, umbrina cirosa) and common pandora (lithrini, pagellus erythrinus).

The Open-Sea Fish Farming Unit

Located at the Governors Coastal area in Limassol, this unit specialised in fish breeding in open-sea cages that are situated at a distance of 1km from the shore and at a depth exceeding 30m.

A unique characteristic of the area is the constant flow of strong sea undercurrents, which results in the fish living in very similar conditions to those living in the wild.

Furthermore, all the nourishment that is fed to the fish is obtained from Internationally certified and recognised companies, guaranteeing that the fish are fed on products that are 100% pure fish and fish sub-products based.

As soon as the bred fish reach the required weight (a preset commercial weight), they undergo the process of thermal shock in frozen water, and they are then transferred to the Fish Processing Unit in specially sealed containers, for processing and packaging.

The Fish Processing Unit

The Fish Processing Unit has the capability to process, package, and distribute both fresh and frozen fish, which originate either from fish farms or from the open-sea. Located in the Strovolos industrial area in a 1500 m² area, the factory boasts specialised machinery and up-to-date technology (special insulatory separators with flooring and controlled temperatures, big spaces, refrigerators, etc.). Moreover, the factory has been built in accordance to the very strict requirements of the European Union, and has also accommodated various requirements of other non-European countries with which the company collaborates. Consequently, it is and remains a pioneer and a prototype not only for the Cypriot market but also for the wider eastern Mediterranean area.

The factory functions under the European guidelines 493/91 and has an exporting licence under the licence CYF 07.
